The prequalification, based on data from the vaccine manufacturer Bavarian Nordic A/S and reviewed by the European Medicines Agency, is designed to speed up the distribution of the vaccine to countries that need it.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, highlighted the significance of this approval in managing mpox outbreaks, particularly in African nations. He urged a quick and efficient rollout of the vaccine to ensure that those at high risk get access. “This vaccine, along with other public health measures, will help reduce infections, stop the spread, and save lives,” he said.

The MVA-BN vaccine is given in two doses, four weeks apart, and is currently approved for use in people over 18. The vaccine can be stored at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius for up to eight weeks, making it easier for regions with limited cold storage options to maintain supplies.

Dr. Yukiko Nakatani, WHO’s Assistant Director-General for Access to Medicines and Health Products, noted that the approval will help global organizations like Gavi and Unicef quickly procure and distribute the vaccine. This will be crucial for frontline communities, particularly in Africa where mpox cases are more prevalent.

Data shows that a single dose of the MVA-BN vaccine is about 76% effective in preventing mpox, with two doses increasing protection to around 82%.

This approval marks a significant milestone in the fight against mpox, ensuring faster access to life-saving vaccines in high-risk areas.
