Kyiv: Ukrainian authorities reported on Thursday that a Russian attack targeted a grocery store and cafe in the eastern Kharkiv region, resulting in the tragic loss of numerous lives.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike, which hit the Kupiansk district of the war-torn region bordering Russia. In this area, Moscow’s forces have been engaged in efforts to regain territory lost to Ukrainian troops last year.
Zelensky characterized the incident as a deliberate act of terror, stating on social media, “The brutal Russian crime of hitting an ordinary grocery store with a rocket is a completely deliberate terrorist attack.”
The Ukrainian prosecutor general confirmed that at least 49 individuals lost their lives in the attack.
Zelensky shared a heart-wrenching image depicting a woman grieving over a casualty apparently caused by the strike, with other lifeless bodies nearby, as rescue personnel diligently worked in the vicinity.
Oleg Sinegubov, the head of the Kharkiv region, disclosed that the strike struck a cafe and shop around 1:15 pm (1015 GMT) in the village of Groza. This village, located approximately 30 kilometers (around 20 miles) west of Kupiansk, a frontline town, had an estimated pre-war population of around 500 people.
Rescue operations are underway, and Sinegubov sadly noted that among the victims, a 6-year-old boy lost his life while one child sustained injuries.
