Supreme Court Intervention

The apex court of India has acted on its suo motu and has stressed on the requisite precautionary measures to protect women in healthcare premises. Earlier this month, the Court asked the West Bengal government to file an affidavit that would describe the measures taken to prevent such cases and guarantee sufficient protection for healthcare professionals.

The Court was specific on measures to be taken to establish safety measures within hospitals; the Court urged hospitals to install surveillance cameras besides hiring security personnel to set within the hospital premises. Further, it called on the state to undertake the provision of training in emergencies to the staff in order to respond well to them.

The Supreme Court also faced the issue of providing a protective environment for HCWs especially women and set the timeframe for submitting the report. This intervention best captures the Court’s passion towards safety issues in the health facilities and the Court’s desire to compensate victims.

Public Outrage and Protests

The murder of the trainee doctor by rape has led to outrage among the public and protests all across India. Both doctors and students as well as other civil society organizations have come out in solidarity in demanding justice for poor women and women in health institutions in general.

This has created new pressures for hospitals and healthcare organizations to introduce strict security measures such as guards, BBT, and good illumination among other features for emergency lights. The issues outlined above ought to be addressed so that healthcare facilities provide and maintain safety for their staff that is female, and the overall protection of the healthcare business.

  • Use of security guards at certain places
  • The establishment of special facilities for women employees
  • An enhancement of infrastructures to foster a learning environment
  • Setting up operations that deal with emergencies

However, these measures are commendable, they still need to be undertaken today, and more so, they should be done efficiently and uniformly. However, there is also a necessity of wide social change of the population including men and tolerance to aggression and violence against women.
