Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Egypt this month, on his way back from a trip to the US, to strengthen cooperation in various areas including security and renewable energy. This visit aims to build on the positive momentum generated by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s visit to India in January, where he was the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations.
The visit, which is currently finalizing the dates and agenda, is expected to be a brief affair. After concluding his state visit to the US on June 24, Prime Minister Modi is likely to travel to Egypt immediately. President El-Sisi has visited India three times in recent years, including attending the third India-Africa Forum Summit in October 2015, his first state visit in September 2016, and his visit as the chief guest in January 2023. Thus, a reciprocal high-level visit from the Indian side has been overdue.
Cooperation in defense, security, and renewable energy, with a focus on green hydrogen, has become significant in bilateral relations between India and Egypt. The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on enhancing defense cooperation last year and agreed to strengthen joint exercises. Egypt has shown interest in India’s indigenous light combat aircraft Tejas and intends to acquire 70 fighter jets.
Egypt has entered into three agreements with Indian firms, which involve planned investments of over $21 billion, to produce green hydrogen. This underscores the importance of renewable energy collaboration between the two nations.
Additionally, fostering interfaith dialogue and addressing issues such as radicalization and extremism are part of the bilateral agenda. In May, the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Shawki Ibrahim Abdel-Karim Allam, visited India and engaged in a series of meetings with religious leaders, reflecting the commitment to interfaith cooperation.
Overall, Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Egypt aims to strengthen bilateral ties, capitalize on the momentum generated by President El-Sisi’s visit to India, and advance collaboration in various areas such as defense, security, renewable energy, and interfaith dialogue.
