On February 20, Elon Musk, the founder of Neuralink, announced that the first human patient implanted with a brain-chip from the company has fully recovered. The patient can now control a computer mouse using their thoughts.
Musk shared this update during a Spaces event on the social media platform X, stating that the progress is promising, and there are no reported ill effects. Neuralink is currently focusing on maximizing mouse button clicks from the patient.
Neuralink successfully implanted the chip on its first human patient last month, following approval for human trial recruitment in September. The procedure involves using a robot to surgically place a brain-computer interface implant in a region of the brain responsible for movement intention. Initially, the goal is to enable individuals to control a computer cursor or keyboard through their thoughts.
Elon Musk envisions Neuralink as a revolutionary tool for treating various conditions such as obesity, autism, depression, and schizophrenia. The company, valued at approximately $5 billion last year, has faced scrutiny over its safety protocols. Reuters previously reported that Neuralink was fined for violating U.S. Department of Transportation rules related to the transportation of hazardous materials.
