Argentina’s BUENOS AIRES (AP) — Liam Payne, 31, a former member of One Direction, whose British boy band reached the top of the charts and had a devoted fan base around the world, was discovered dead Wednesday after falling from a Buenos Aires hotel balcony, according to local authorities.
Payne suffered “extremely serious injuries” after falling from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel in the upscale Palermo section of Argentina’s capital, according to a statement from Buenos Aires police. According to the statement, doctors immediately verified his death.
The Buenos Aires Security Ministry’s communications director, Pablo Policicchio, told The Associated Press that Payne “had jumped from the balcony of his room.” He added that shortly after 5 p.m. local time, police responded to an emergency call and hurried to the hotel, alerting them to the presence of a “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
On a 911 call that the AP was able to get, the hotel manager can be heard stating that they had “a visitor who is overcome with narcotics and alcohol… We need you to send someone, please, since he is ruining the entire room. As the phone continued, the manager’s voice grew increasingly agitated, pointing out that the room featured a balcony.
The chief of the state emergency medical system, Alberto Crescenti, told Argentina’s Todo Noticias TV program that an autopsy and an investigation into his death’s circumstances were being carried out by authorities.
Payne has previously been outspoken about his battle with alcoholism. In July 2023, he uploaded a video to his YouTube account claiming to have been sober for six months following treatment. Payne representatives did not immediately return calls or emails.
Following the news, dozens of One Direction fans traveled from all around Buenos Aires to the Casa Sur Hotel, where they formed lines that extended onto the street outside the hotel, which was blocked off and guarded by police. About three hours after the fall, forensic investigators were observed leaving the hotel where Payne’s body had been taken. Outside the hotel, an impromptu memorial with rows of candles and bouquets swiftly developed, and young women shooting on their cellphones voiced shock and sadness.
