Is Donald Trump’s Victory Good or Bad for India?

Date:

Donald Trump, a Republican, has won the U.S. presidential election today on 6th Nov 2024, according to the results. Trump will serve a second term in office. Prior to that, from 2017 to 2021, he was the 45th president of the United States.

Trump frequently calls Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi a friend while discussing India. But he has also occasionally criticized India’s policies. Trump made repeated references to PM Modi’s name during this election.

It is anticipated that Trump’s policies will once more prioritize “America First” on the business and economic fronts. He took a firm stand against nations like China and India during his first administration and implemented regulations to safeguard American businesses. Trump has reiterated the “America First” theme this time around and has threatened to take action against nations who impose hefty taxes on American goods and services. These actions may have an impact on India as well. Trade conflicts could result from this, according to international relations analysts.

Defense Relations:

Donald Trump has a reputation for being a harsh critic of China, and ties between the United States and China drastically worsened during his first term. The United States and India’s defense ties may be strengthened by this friction. During his first term, Trump actively worked to fortify the Indo-Pacific security-focused Quad alliance, which consists of the United States, Australia, India, and Japan. He may stick to this plan, boosting technology transfer, holding joint military drills, and expanding arms exports to India.

On social media, Derek Grossman, an Indo-Pacific analyst with the American think tank Rand Corporation, also pointed out that Trump’s win would mean that the present U.S.-India approach will continue, with less focus on values-based dialogue.

All things considered, India will strategically gain from Trump’s leadership. However, given that his administration has already made things difficult for immigrants, his visa rules might worry India. Trump has been outspoken on this matter, which may affect Indian professionals—many of whom are on H-1B visas—who work in the U.S. tech industry. Trump tightened H-1B visa requirements during his first term, which had an impact on tech companies and Indian workers. Indian professionals working in the United States may face difficulties if his government keeps going in this manner.

Human Rights and Cooperative Strategy:

Trump has remained silent about India’s human rights record, which is in line with the Modi administration’s position. Trump defended India’s right to self-defense during the Pulwama incident in Kashmir, but Biden took a more circumspect approach to the same problems.

Trump views India as a crucial Asian strategic ally in his fight against China. In opposition to China, he wants to deepen strategic collaboration with India. Trump has publicly endorsed India’s position on matters such as Bangladesh.
