U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris took to southern Georgia by bus on Wednesday, energizing the Democratic base as the party aims to reclaim the swing state in the upcoming election against Donald Trump. Initially, President Joe Biden was expected to lose the state he narrowly flipped from Trump in 2020. However, since Harris took over as the Democratic candidate five weeks ago, there’s renewed hope that the state could swing blue once again.
With the U.S. election just ten weeks away, both Harris and Trump are intensifying their campaigns across seven key battleground states, making the race even more extraordinary and fast-paced.
“We’re harnessing the energy and putting in the work to secure victory in 2024,” Harris’s campaign stated.
Building on the momentum from the Democratic National Convention, Harris, alongside running mate Tim Walz, embarked on a two-day bus tour through southern Georgia. This tour is focused on Black and working-class voters, who are seen as crucial to securing a victory in the state this November.
Starting in Savannah, Harris met with students from a historically Black university before heading to rural communities. There, some onlookers displayed Trump flags. She made a stop at Liberty County High School in Hinesville, encouraging students and emphasizing the importance of their participation in the upcoming election.
In Savannah, Harris and Walz visited Sandfly Bar-B-Q, where they interacted with diners and staff, taking the time to pose for photos and discuss the significance of the upcoming election.
The bus tour will culminate in a rally on Thursday in Savannah, where Harris will also face her first major media test since launching her campaign—a joint interview on CNN with Walz.
While Republicans have criticized Harris for avoiding media scrutiny, she has revitalized the Democratic Party, raising substantial funds and closing the gap in polls that once favored Trump.
However, Harris remains cautious, viewing herself as the underdog. She recognizes that the election will hinge on the battleground states, including Georgia, where Biden won by a razor-thin margin in 2020.
Harris is expanding her focus to include four additional “Sun Belt” states—Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina, and Georgia—as part of a strategy to secure the Electoral College.
Georgia, a critical target, is a challenging battleground. Biden won the state by less than 12,000 votes in 2020, a result that Trump has fiercely contested. Trump is currently facing criminal charges in Georgia related to alleged efforts to overturn that election result.
In a boost for Harris, the latest Fox News poll shows her slightly ahead of Trump in Georgia, 50% to 48%.
Meanwhile, Trump is also ramping up his campaign efforts in key swing states as he seeks to regain his footing after Harris’s surprise candidacy.
As the election draws closer, both candidates are intensifying their efforts to win over voters in Georgia and other crucial states, setting the stage for a highly contested race.
