On Sunday, September 15, former president Donald Trump attacked pop star Taylor Swift on social media, just days after she officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
“I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” Trump wrote in all caps on Truth Social.
After the first presidential debate between Trump and Harris on ABC News, Swift shared her support for Harris with her 238 million Instagram followers (which had grown to 284 million by September 15).
“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election,” Swift wrote, including a picture of her cat, Benjamin Button. “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.”
Swift also praised Harris, calling her a “steady-handed, gifted leader” and a “warrior” for causes she cares about, like LGBTQ+ rights and women’s reproductive freedom.
Swift’s endorsement also addressed Donald Trump sharing fake AI images that falsely showed her supporting him.
“It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation,” Swift said about the fake images. “It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.”
Swift ended her Instagram post as “Childless Cat Lady,” a playful response to Trump’s VP candidate JD Vance, who had once used that term to insult Democratic leaders without children.
After her endorsement, around 400,000 people visited the Vote.gov registration website in the following days.
This isn’t the first time Swift has spoken out for Democratic candidates. In 2018, she endorsed Phil Bredesen in his race against Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn, saying Blackburn’s voting record “appals and terrifies me.” She also supported President Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
