At Least 4 Killed in US’s Georgia School Shooting, 14-Year-Old Suspect Arrested

Date:

Washington: At least four people have been killed after a gunman opened fire at a high school in Georgia, USA. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, and the surrounding neighborhood was placed under a “hard lockdown.” The suspect, a 14-year-old, has been arrested.

Local reports indicate that several others have been injured, with at least one person airlifted to a hospital.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) confirmed that it responded to the “shooting” at the high school. According to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement and emergency personnel were dispatched at around 10:23 a.m. following reports of an active shooter.

Students were evacuated from the school, and many were seen gathered on a nearby field. The sheriff’s office confirmed that the suspect, a 14-year-old boy, is now in custody. It is unclear at this time if the suspect was a student at Apalachee High School, where the shooting took place.

CNN reported that, in addition to the four confirmed deaths, over a dozen people were injured. Some of the injuries were caused by gunfire, while others occurred as people tried to escape or take cover.

Apalachee High School, located in Winder, Georgia, approximately 45 miles northeast of Atlanta, issued a message to parents confirming the “hard lockdown” due to gunfire.

The GBI stated on social media that agents are on-site, assisting local, state, and federal law enforcement with the investigation. They urged the public to avoid coming to the school while the area is being secured.

ABC News quoted a student, Sergio Caldera, who described hearing gunshots while in chemistry class. His teacher quickly shut the door as students and staff took cover. After several tense moments, his class was evacuated to the school’s football field, according to a report by Reuters.

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith addressed the media, stating, “What we see behind us is an evil thing today.”

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced that state agencies are responding to the incident, and the White House confirmed that President Joe Biden had been briefed.

The U.S. has experienced hundreds of school shootings in recent decades. The deadliest was at Virginia Tech in 2007, where over 30 people were killed, fueling ongoing debates about gun laws and the Second Amendment, which protects the right to bear arms.
