2 New Symptoms Found in COVID JN.1 Variant Cases

Date:

As the prevalence of COVID cases linked to the COVID JN.1 variant continues to rise, two additional symptoms associated with COVID-19 infection have been identified. The UK’s Office for National Statistics (UK ONS) has highlighted these symptoms amid the escalating global COVID cases. In India, where over 4,000 active COVID cases have been reported, the first JN.1 variant case emerged on December 8 in Kerala.

What are the two new COVID JN.1 Variant symptoms?

The latest data from the Office for National Statistics reveals two new symptoms: trouble sleeping and anxiety. According to The Mirror, the UK’s ONS noted that, in addition to the previously reported common symptoms of COVID, such as runny noses, coughs, headaches, and weakness, some individuals have reported experiencing trouble sleeping and anxiety.

What are the current symptoms of COVID-19?

Apart from the newly identified symptoms, the current symptoms of COVID-19 remain consistent with those observed in earlier waves of infection. These include fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, loss of taste and smell, sore throat, congestion, runny nose, nausea, and diarrhea.

JN.1 variant exhibits heightened immune evasion compared to its predecessor strains.

The JN.1 variant is rapidly spreading and has been described as “quite devious” by Thomas Russo, M.D., professor and chief of infectious diseases at the University at Buffalo in New York. According to Russo, JN.1 carries a mutation on its spike protein, making it significantly more immune evasive than its parent strains. He noted, “There’s some inferential data from lab findings that JN.1 may be more infectious.”

How to ensure safety:

To safeguard against COVID, maintain regular hand hygiene through thorough handwashing with soap and water. Wear masks in crowded settings, observe physical distancing, and comply with local guidelines. Refrain from touching your face, particularly the eyes, nose, and mouth. Stay updated on the latest developments, adhere to vaccination recommendations, and consult medical professionals if experiencing symptoms. Disinfect frequently touched surfaces and prioritize outdoor activities whenever feasible. Practice respiratory hygiene by covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Stay at home if feeling unwell and encourage others to do the same. Adopt a proactive and cautious approach, considering the evolving nature of the pandemic.
