4 Children die due to suspected Chandipura virus infection — know symptoms, treatment & other details

Date:

Ahmedabad, July 15, 2024: Tragedy has befallen Panchmahal district in Gujarat, as four children reportedly died from an outbreak of the suspected Chandipura virus. Health officials are on high alert for an investigation into the cause of death and the thwarting of the possible further spread of the virus.

These deaths were reported from the tribal parts of the district. Health authorities have immediately responded to the mishap. Children showed symptoms similar to those of Chandipura virus, a pathogen that causes encephalitis or inflammation of the brain.

This sandfly-borne Chandipura Virus causes sudden high fever, fits, changes in mental status, and vomiting. More serious cases may be linked with encephalitis, which can prove to be life-threatening in children with small body mass.

The Gujarat State Health Department has rushed its rapid response teams to the affected areas, which are doing house-to-house surveillance and testing. All the preventive measures—from vector control programs to creating public awareness about the importance of taking precautions—have been ramped up to break the chain of transmission. No specific antiviral is available for the treatment of Chandipura virus infection; treatment is of a supportive nature, with symptomatic management keeping the complications at minimal levels.

People should take care that bites from sandflies, especially during this period, are prevented by applying insect repellents, installing nets on doors and windows, and wearing protective clothing. At the first sign of illness, one should seek advice from a medical professional test.

Health authorities are warning members of the public not to panic but rather maintain vigilance in reporting suspected cases immediately. The government assures that necessary measures shall be taken to safeguard the safety and health of all its residents to the best of its ability.
